Registered vs unregistered NDIS providers: what's the difference?
Wondering whether you need a registered NDIS provider? Here's a plain-language guide to the difference between registered and unregistered providers, and what it means for your plan.
One of the most common questions we hear is: “Do I have to use a registered NDIS provider?” The honest answer is — it depends on how your plan is managed. Here’s a clear, jargon-free breakdown.
What is a registered NDIS provider?
A registered provider has gone through the NDIS Commission’s formal registration process, including audits against the NDIS Practice Standards. Registration is required to deliver certain higher-risk supports (like Specialist Disability Accommodation or some behaviour supports) and to work with participants whose plans are agency-managed (managed directly by the NDIA).
What is an unregistered NDIS provider?
An unregistered provider delivers NDIS supports without that formal registration. This is completely legitimate — a large portion of NDIS supports across Australia are delivered by unregistered providers, particularly community, social and daily living supports.
Unregistered providers can be used by participants who are:
- Self-managed — you manage your own funding and choose any provider you like.
- Plan-managed — a plan manager pays your invoices, and you can use both registered and unregistered providers.
The main thing unregistered providers can’t do is work with agency-managed participants, or deliver the specific supports that legally require registration.
Does unregistered mean lower quality?
No. Registration is about a particular compliance pathway — it isn’t the only marker of a quality, safe, person-centred service. Many excellent providers choose to remain unregistered so they can stay flexible and focus their resources on delivering great supports rather than on audit overhead.
What matters most when choosing any provider:
- Do they listen? Good support starts with understanding your goals.
- Are they transparent? Clear service agreements, pricing in line with the NDIS price guide, and honest communication.
- Do they have the right experience? For your specific supports and situation.
- Do they respect your rights? Including privacy, choice and control, and a clear complaints process.
How to work out what you need
- Check how your plan is managed. This is the single biggest factor. If you’re self-managed or plan-managed, unregistered providers are an option.
- Look at the supports you want. Most community and daily living supports don’t require a registered provider.
- Ask questions. Any good provider should be happy to explain their registration status and what it means for you.
